An Ode to Sylvia (written by Ken Laycock 6/22/08)
If ever there was a time and place, this was her time this was her place
Seven decades within the millions and millions of years of this planets existence
From the depths of the Depression to the heights of outer Space
Sylvia was here can you hear? Can you hear?
Oh yes what was it that we heard back in the 30’s
Sylvia was young at that time
What did we hear? What did we hear?
Save those pennies, do not throw out the chicken with the broth
Do you know how much that cost?
Then through the 40’s what did we hear what did we hear?
Waste not Want not. Loose lips sink ships!
The first was easy the second gave us pause.
If she could not talk, how could her advice be heard for the cause?
And those 50’s the decade of conspicuous consumption
Those who were here then would remember
Keep up with the Joneses soon it will be December.
Those were the days that Sylvia splurged
Not one not two but three presents under the tree
One for Sylvia but always two for thee
The 60’s brought us peace love and flowery apparal
Two blessings for Sylvia: Anita and Carol
What did we hear what did we hear?
Two girls that’s wonderful the dress for Anita would soon belong to Carol!
And the 70’s could be called the decade of Bloom
GM Jaycees Junior achievement United way and of Course Jaycettes
Gene was elevating at home and with his Career
But from Sylvia what did we hear? What did we hear?
Gene pick up your socks! Anita and Carol clean up your mess
You may be the Grand Poobah at work but at home I am the Princess!
Now the 80’s the Reagan years no time to play
Gene and Sylvia were headed for the U S of A!
Little did they know that behind this soft-spoken articulate leader?
Stood a Blonde dynamo with plenty of advice and lots of time left on her meter
What did we hear what did we hear
If you want to know the secret of winning
Stop your whining stop your spinning
Just do the job and be happy in your work
Nothing comes easy when you act like a jerk
Needless to say no one questioned that quirk
The 90’s will always stand out as the decade of elegance
Gene and Sylvia were off to France!!
New culture new language and international drivers license.
What more does one need to give the French one more chance?
What did we hear what did we hear?
Or should I say
Attention s’il vous plait
Je m appele Sylvia attendez du moi!
Et les persons etes tres acute
That’s all the French I know but they just stood there mute!
And of course before long things were taking shape
The result was life long friends and wonderful memories when one needed to escape
And the new millennium, time to retire
What a wonderful life so many friends so many memories
To Naples she went with Gene at her side
She packed everything and I mean everything including
Sylvia’s handbook on how to do anything at any time better than you may have ever imagined (this needs some explanation)
A pretty long title but what do you think, advice cannot be given without a full articulation
Many wonderful years of Golf theater parties parties and oh yes parties
These social gatherings gave Sylvia the opportunity to come out of her shell
It has been said that these parties turned into the Marathon that even today
People can only say don’t ask don’t tell
It was a sunny day in Naples when we said goodbye
Those who were there were determined not to cry
Now on a sunny day in Windsor we are gathered again
What do we hear what do we hear?
“I am fine we are getting organized the committees are in gear”
So hug your friends love your families and have a great time
I am watching and so far everything is going fine
Oh Gene please straighten your tie and give your shoes a shine!!
Sylvia we are here because of our love and respect for you
And to thank the universe for the opportunity of knowing you!

I AM FREE (author unknown)
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God laid for me
I took His hand when I heard Him call
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, to laugh,
to love, to work or play.
Tasks undone must stay that way
I've found that peace at the close of the day.
If parting has left a void, then fill it
with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much
Good friends, good times,
a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
God wants me now, He set me free.
